Adventures with the tablet...

Mon May 12, 2008, 8:59 PM
After scribbling, doodling and making a few devs with it I was really satisfied with its performance. I would like to thank *xHaStex for his unique tip (using a paper to create friction when using a tablet). Not only would it prevent the surface from getting scratches you also feel like your really drawing in a traditional way!!! That really helped me adjust my eye-hand coordination and now drawing felt natural...

But what still really bothers me is my speed when inking. Even though I'm using a tablet it still took me hours just to finish the line art . Is it just me or am I slow and sloppy inker? Is there a way or technique to speed things up? I've seen animators ink a character in minutes!!! There must be a technique for this like...hmm...using weights (like in the animes) LOL

BTW my hand especially the joint of my index finger kinda hurts is this Carpal-Tunnel Syndrome?! :omg: I better start using my left hand for common tasks like brushing my teeth or opening doors...

What this?!

Well I realized that I need to keep track of my progress so this is it. Its a progress chart of certain art elements. From now on everytime I create a dev I'll add points to it(IMO). There is no maximum points cuz art cannot be mastered. I realized that every time I create a deviation I learn a few stuff just take a look at my first dev [link] and my latest [link]
There's already a big difference...With this chart I can keep track of the things that I learned and see the things that I should improve...

Alot of what you require will take time, and it's something that will come naturally. Getting a good feel for the pen takes time as well. I don't really have a technique. I just draw like I would with a real pencil. If it's a sketch or WIP, I can afford to be messy, if not, I have to take my time.
Wow, I can never use my tablet for inking bec. the lines I make are really wobbly :omg:

Lei Wulong ...... rocks...! Xiaoyu too.. ;)
glad i could help buddy....but i gotta admit...i was told that tip by quite a few people....i dint discover it myself...i just passed it on....
give it time d00d3...soon you'll be inking your art in no time at all....seriously just keep battering away at it....i thought id never give up on that traditional element in my work....now i work virtually all digital....
have you tried progs such as (if youve got cash) Painter...or the free progs such as deep paint, artweaver or the free version of artrage?....i found Artrage really helpful in making the transition to digital....it works just like a pencil and paper...the pen drags (ever so slightly, hardly noticable) so it adds even more to that natural feel....i often skecth in artrage then take my work into Paint Shop Pro (Photoshop is what most people use but i aint got that kinda moola)....

Wacom Graphire 4. I've seen you're Yuffie fanart. You mean you didnt use a tablet on it? Which means you only painted it with a mouse?!

I've heard that some people are practicing strokes like during preschool days. They say it helps them improve there speed but I havent confirmed that info...

Have you tried using the paper-over-tablet method? Maybe you need to customized its settings?

Artrage sounds nice. I might try it if I can download it. BTW what's the advantage of Paintshop Pro over PS?

I think I need to upgrade my PC first before buying the latest software. I only have 512 Ram and Pentium 4 processor. The latest usually recommends 1-2g GB Ram

If that helps then draw better or get used to using a tablet, I'm not going to make fun.

It usually takes me more or less 24 hours to finish an artwork. Am I?
