Last thursday I watched Prince of Persia just for the sake of watching something. Actually I was planning to watch Robin Hood but since its screening was changed my only option was Prince of Persia. I never had any expectation because I thought it would suck or might be a little bit cheesy and I was proven wrong. Its actually a pretty solid movie with satisfying action scenes, drama and comedy. And my God, Gemma Arterton is really hot and looks like some sort of goddess and I bet she'll be the next blockbuster movie actress just like Sam Worthington(which was her love interest in Clash of the Titans). Anyway I really can't say if it deviated from the games since the only Prince of Persia game that I have played is the original one. Yep the 1st Prince of Persia during the NES era. I'll probably rank Prince of Persia equal or probably second to Silent Hill which I consider as the best video game movie up until now.

BTW Resident Evil: Afterlife will be probably shown this year and it really pisses me off. Paul Anderson really messed up the franchise and he is milking the fans to death. I mean the action scenes were utterly crap, even in game cut scenes were better than the movie. Not to mention how he butchered the characters so that his mary-sue character Alice(which is actually his wife) would shine and become the central character. I really hope this will be the last film.

I was personally expecting Pirates of the Caribbean in the desert. But it actually exceeded my expectations. Unlike your archetypal video game-based movie, the plot was pretty solid.

The plot was fairly faithful to the game Prince of Persia:Sands of Time (which I highly recommend, it's tons of fun). The acting was decent (shocking, since Jake Gyllenhaal plays the Prince.) unlike the average movie made today, it was devoid of "groan moments".

I do feel the relationship between Dastan and Tamina was rushed (they spend the lion's share of the film at each other's throats then they jump to being totally hot for each other, what? No graceful acceptance period?) I did like Alfred Molina as the Sheik, he is the only character that could be considered comedy relief, but he shows other sides and doesn't fall into that non-threatening stereotype that so many supporting cast members of Pirates did.

The action was very good and reminiscent of the games (the shots laced with CG effects just ring of VG cut scene, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not) and I have to compliment the way they went all out with the sets and costumes, and yes, I agree that Gemma was pretty sexy in this film. The major gripe that I hear from folks who haven't seen it is that the actors aren't Persian and don't even look the part, it's a honky-mentality that looms large in Hollywood (Studio executives believe that only a white/black person can be the star otherwise audiences won't go) but it doesn't really show in this movie. Once everything starts moving, you forget that aspect quickly.

In terms of quality, it may be the best VG movie, but I still like Mortal Kombat the best (definitely NOT MK: Annihiliation).
